Makeshift

jumper: modcloth, blouse: vintage, thrifted, boots: marshall's, tote: gift from friend
If you follow me on Twitter, you know that on Sunday I went with my mom to the monthly Alameda flea market. We have not been in a few months for various reasons, so I was happy that we were finally going again! Better yet, I was excited to wear my Modcloth jumper purchased during their Cabin Fever Sale. Except, wearing it was not the experience I could have hoped for in my first time buying from Modcloth. TRUE - the jumper was on sale, and yes, the reviews did say that the sizing was flawed. I understand this. It is flawed. I'm honestly going to have to reconstruct the dress, that's how bad the fit is. In these photos I hid it decently with a safety pin, but I still feel like it looks so awkward, not to mention it felt awkward on my body.

So, not only is the fit pretty bad, but about 3 hours into the day (mind you, this is the first time I'm wearing the jumper) the left button just...falls off. Which is why you lovely people get to see my makeshift button which looks painfully out of place, in my opinion. And it's not really a button at all, but a brooch that my mom bought at the flea market. Fortunately we had that or else I'm not sure what I would have done... Needless to say, I'm not pleased with my first purchase from Modcloth and I am going to email them telling them this. Before this incident, I always held Modcloth in high regard, but now I'm confused. I hope this is not normal for the company, because that would truly be a shame.

Anyway, I just felt the need to share this information. I had a great time Sunday at the flea market though, don't get me wrong! My mom bought me a cute little owl to add to my collection that I'll probably post about if I do a phone pics post this week. :) Ciao! xx

  2. I love your outfit and your mum's jacket, its a great colour. He he, I was kinda confused when I first read this cos in ireland a jumper is a sweater, and I was thinking she's not even wearing a jumper? I guess we would call what you call a jumper, a pinafore or just a dress...

  3. That sucks about your jumper, although I think it looks fabulous in these photos so you managed to hide the ill-fit well. Your mom looks snazzy too! Anyway, I've had some disappointing experiences with Modcloth, but only with items I've gotten on sale... I guess they're on sale for a reason, ya know? I tend to only purchase something on sale now if the reviews are fairly decent and I double check the sizing chart. I find that the product reviews mean everything on MC.

  4. Welll, lets hope modcloth isn't the f21 of the internet. I've never tried their garments so I don't know. I tend to avoid companies that deliver experiences like that, who cares if it's cheap, I don't need to fill my closet with garments that will last one wear, if that. You can thrift a jumper that needs tailoring, you know? Please write about their response to your issue!

Other than that, looks like you had an excellent day! The blouse is adorable.

  5. I wish we had a flea market like that near here, although it'd be covered in snow right now anyway hah. Bummer about your jumper. I've never purchased from Modcloth before, but I read a lot of reviews and it seems some of their products are quite cheaply made, guess it depends on what you're buying.

  6. you are such a cutie. both you and your mom!
i want to spend a weekend at the flea market. how wonderful.
sorry to hear about your jumper. (it is really lovely though ;) ) but i have had some things from modcloth that have fallen apart after one wear. i always just stick with the sale items now or most of the time i just thrift or shop at vintage stores.

  9. Love the pictures! This makes me wish I could go out to a flea market and dig up some treasures myself...unfortunately the climate here is terrible at the moment. That's really unfortunate about your jumper though :/ I'm sorry to hear that. Though of course, that does mean... more excuses to go shopping now :)

  10. boo! That sucks. I hate it when that happens. You should talk to them I am sure they will give you your money back. It is so cute tho! Baa! Maybe you can reconstruct it or pray to the thrifting gods.

Happy to see you and your mom had a good day none the less x

  11. The little jumper is adorable on you. I love vintage blouse SO much though. I've had some similar experiences with Modcloth items, one of the dresses I got from there lost TWO buttons the first time I wore it out. After I sewed them back on they worked pretty well. But some other things I've purchased there have fit really strangely on the top or the bottom. It makes me feel... not normal...

  12. Sorry to hear about your wardrobe troubles! I've never bought anything from ModCloth...so I can't say whether or not that's normal. But what a shame! They have so many pretty things.
But on the bright side - you and your Mom are both ADORABLE! What a perfect mom/daughter date :D

  13. sorry that your first modcloth experience was so bad! i haven't bought anything from there ever, but that makes me a little nervous for the price you have to pay.
i still think it looks super sweet on you, and i'm sure with a few alterations it will feel less awkward.

also, so jealous of that flea market!! i need to move somewhere warmer that has year round flea markets.

  14. This flea market looks incredible! So sorry about your ModCloth experience. I got a necklace from them for Christmas and it ripped a shirt of mine cause one of the rungs wasn't clasped so it was just sticking out. It was the A Beautiful Mess locket. Sucked man...

  15. Oh, the flea market looks like an awesome time. That's such a bummer about the dress. I got a dress too from the Cabin Fever sale and the fabric of the dress is literally fraying near the seam in the back of the dress. I'm going to have to send them an email about it since they are supposed to have an excellent return service. Even though it's final sale only. :(

  16. Man, it's really nice to see a blogger talking honestly about modcloth purchases. Nearly every time I've ordered from them there's been something off about my purchase. A few months ago I ordered a coat that was just missing two buttons! They weren't in the box or anything. I don't even know. So now I only order when things are on super sale so I don't regret it too much. The jumper still looks super adorable on you, and it was good quick thinking to use the brooch as a button! I so badly want to go the the alameda flea market! My past two trips to California weren't timed right to go, so hopefully next time I'll get to!

  17. Even though you say the dress is fit very oddly...I absolutely adore this outfit! So cute and definitely one of my favorites of yours. I have yet to buy from Modcloth, but I'm sorry for the first bad experience :/
Anyways LOVE your outfit & your mom is super stylish too! So awesome :)

  18. I've always wanted to visit a flea market, just never really think about going!

As far as the jumper goes, I do know that ModCloth has fantastic customer service. When I bought a pair of heels that turned out to run extremely small (I couldn't even get half of my foot inside), they were very helpful and apologetic about the situation. They'll probably (hopefully) offer your money back with no hassle. Good luck!

  19. Aha yes! Modcloth isn't perfect, it's so true. I got this one tunic for Christmas and the fit is just.. off. It was too late to send it back though so I still have it. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has gotten something from there that was not 100%.. however, I have had many good purchases from there so I can't bash them completely! ;)
The jumper is cute though. Definitely has potential!

  20. ugh i miss the flea. but i can't wait to see what you do with the modcloth jumpery thingy. and it all depends on the brand that makes the items. the 'nicer' items i bought from there, ymc and dear creatures, are amazing. the 'off' brands, the random ones they usually sell for $50, are cheap.

  23. Even though you had some problems with the jumper, I adore this outfit. I hope you can alter it and make it work for the future; I'd love to see it styled again!

  25. That really is quite the bummer that you had not so good luck with your first Modcloth purchase. I've heard (and also from personal experience) that they have really good customer service, so I hope you have better luck after talking to them. However, I did notice your little addition to fix the dress, but before I even read what you said, I just though "Oh, look at her, she's so nifty, adding a cute little brooch to spice things up." :)
