Portland / Vancouver, 2013

I've been home a week now since my trip to Portland/Vancouver (WA), but don't you think that I'd let myself get away with not posting some photos! As usual, my time with Rachael was full of coffee, plants, wonderful music, and general hilarity. There are few people with whom I laugh as hard than with Rachael. If you need a reminder, Rachael and I became friends winter quarter of last school year and we've been pretty inseparable ever since. And now, we will be rooming together in the dorms at SPU for our sophomore year! She's a gem & I know I'm lucky to have found her. She has been a confidant and a listener, a partner in crime, and a general inspiration to me. She has helped me to see the wonderful world of plants and the natural world altogether -- and I can't thank her enough for that introduction. She has a curious mind and we never run out of things to talk about; whether it be God, the universe, art and music, or simply donuts (yeah, because who doesn't love donuts?) ... it's never a dull moment.

I actually celebrated my 20th birthday on September 7th while in Portland on this trip! Strange as it was to be away from home on my birthday, it was a fantastic day because Rachael and I saw The Head and the Heart! We situated ourselves in the very front row when doors opened and it was well worth the wait. This was my first time seeing the band and they killed it. The Head and the Heart are one of those bands where you love every single song on their record. When that happens, you know you have a winner. They have a new album coming out soon as well which I am so amped to hear. They played a few songs from it, and I already know that I am going to love it. The band finished their set list with Rivers and Roads, which was basically the going-away-to-college song of last summer. I was near to crying as they performed it.

One of the reasons I love music as much as I do (as well as hate it sometimes) -- emotions are so tightly wound up in the melodies and lyrics. Just hearing Rivers and Roads made me flashback to my life as it was last summer. The summer before college; before leaving home; where I would miss your face like hell. It kills me every time. Needless to say, it was a wonderful experience being a part of the music that this band created. If you haven't heard The Head and the Heart, now's your chance. ;) xx

  1. I've seen Head & the Heart 3 times live and they NEVER let me down. Just saw them last night, actually, in Eugene OR with Neko Case. Holy cow they are EXCELLENT. The first time I saw them my friends and I were able to hang out with the band after the show for a little bit, actually!

  2. I love this post because I have exactly the same feelings about The Head and the Heart - every song on their self titled album is gold. I actually just caught them when they visited Maine back in August and they must've done the same set that you saw. Didn't my heart soar when I heard Rivers and Roads... It's truly a powerful song and it got me through last year as well when I had to say a temporary goodbye to someone I loved. I can't wait until they release their new album in a few weeks!

    Cheers!

  3. YES The Head and the Heart. These photos are gorgeous. I miss Vancouver so much. I used to go once a year with my dad when I was younger and I loved it every time. I can't wait until I can move to Seattle in a few years. Happy belated birthday also! welcome to the terrific 20s!

  4. It's hard for me to think that you JUST turned 20. Because I'm 20. And you seem so much more mature than I am. But anyway, happy birthday! The Head and the Heart have some great music, and it must have been amazing to see them. =)
